Standard Overdraft & Courtesy Pay
With Standard Overdraft and Courtesy Pay from Altura Credit Union, you can have confidence that your transactions will always be accepted and your checks will never bounce.
Payment Options with Altura Credit Union Protecting You from Overdrafts
If you have payroll direct deposit (PDD) in your Altura checking account, you qualify for our Standard Overdraft and Courtesy Pay services. With these services, you have extra protection against insufficient funds. If you don’t have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, Standard Overdraft or Courtesy Pay will kick in. Altura Credit Union will cover the difference up to a certain amount. You don’t have to worry about transactions being declined.
To use these options, you will have to pay a fee. This fee is only applied when Altura needs to help you cover a transaction associated with your account. The transaction is paid for, the fee is assessed, and the account is taken negative. Altura does this if you have payroll direct deposit because we know you will have a deposit soon to cover the overdraft.
These services definitely make your life a little easier! Keep in mind, however, that Altura pays overdrafts at its discretion. That means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction.
How It Works
Standard Overdraft will cover electronic transactions, transactions initiated using your routing and account number, written checks, or recurring transactions. This is a service provided with your checking account unless you’ve opt-out.
Courtesy Pay will cover everyday transactions made with your debit card, including ATM transactions. This service is not automatically included with your checking account so you must opt-in to utilize this feature. If you do not opt-in, or opt-out, the service will be discontinued on your account. Your debit and ATM transactions will also be denied if you have insufficient funds in your account. You can opt-into or out of this service at any time.
How to Get Started
To manage your opt-in status to Standard Overdraft or Courtesy Pay and assure that your account continues to receive this overdraft protection service, visit https://my.alturacu.com/AlturaOverdraftCourtesyPay or login into Online Banking, navigate to the menu, select Account Services & Settings > Overdraft Protection Services. FAQs
How Do I Avoid Overdraft Fees?
The easiest and most effective way to avoid overdraft fees is to monitor your account. Keep track of your balance and sign up for e-alerts. Budgeting your money will also help you avoid making purchases you can’t afford. By using overdraft protection, you will always have a backup if there isn’t enough in your account to cover a transaction.
Will an Overdraft Hurt My Credit?
Simply overdrawing your checking account does not impact your credit score, however, failing to bring your checking account to a positive balance could result in your account being closed and reported to ChexSystems and the credit bureaus. This would impact your ability to open accounts at other financial institutions as well as negatively impact your credit score. If you are having trouble keeping your account balance positive, it’s always best to proactively reach out to Altura to discuss options. Financial Counseling services are also available for FREE through Altura’s partnership with Balance.
What is the difference between Standard Overdraft and Courtesy Pay?
Standard Overdraft will cover electronic payments (when your account and routing number are provided) or written checks. You Courtesy will cover everyday transactions, such as debit card and ATM withdrawals.
What if I setup Overdraft Transfers and Standard Overdraft or Courtesy Pay?
Altura will first utilize overdraft protection before using Standard Overdraft or Courtesy Pay. This way your transactions are still covered and you do not have to worry about the overdraft fee.
What happens if I no longer want my Overdraft Line of Credit?
So long as your balance due is paid in full, you can easily opt out of the line of credit and close the account through online banking or by contacting a member service representative. If you still have a balance owed, the loan will stay open until it is paid in full. Once there is a $0 balance, the loan will close and it will report to the credit bureaus as a closed loan.
I applied for the overdraft line of credit, but it is not available to link to my checking account
To maintain access to the Overdraft Line of Credit, you must have consistent deposit activity of at least $100 over any 45 day period. If you do not maintain the minimum deposit requirement, your loan will not close, however, it will not be accessible to cover any overdrafts until you re-establish the required minimum deposit activity.
