Savings Accounts

Types of Savings Accounts

Savings accounts make it easy for you to build a financial security blanket for your future. They help you save for emergencies, as well as large purchases. Best of all, you earn dividends on your savings.

You don’t need a ton of money to start a savings account. Our Primary Savings Account option has a minimum opening deposit of just $25. You can even open a Side Share Savings Account with an opening deposit of any amount.

Earn Dividends and Write Checks Using the Same Account

Sometimes the idea of investing is scary. You may not be willing to part with a large sum of cash by putting it in an account long-term. Fortunately, money markets make investing a little easier.

Money market accounts are the perfect combination of savings and checking accounts. However, unlike a traditional savings account, you can also write checks with your money market. The higher your account balance is, the higher dividends you’ll earn. You invest in a money market account to earn the higher dividends than you would with a savings account.

Prestige Money Markets:

  • Earn tiered dividend rates that are paid monthly and calculated daily.
  • Require a $2,500 minimum and ten debit card transactions from an Altura checking account are required per month to earn higher dividend rates and avoid monthly fee.
  • Ability to write up to three checks per month.

FAQs

How Do Savings Accounts Work?

With a savings account, you earn interest on your money simply for keeping it there. Altura lends the money in your account out to other credit union members. The longer you keep your money in a savings account and the more money you have in the account, the more interest you’ll earn.

How Many Savings Account Withdrawals Can I Make?

Your savings account is supposed to function just as its name implies: as a way to save money. Because of this, you are limited to making only six withdrawals each month. You are also restricted with the kinds of withdrawals you can make. Examples of acceptable withdrawals include:

  • Debit card transactions
  • Wire transfers
  • Electronic funds transfers
  • ACH transfers
  • Overdraft transfers

What Happens If I Exceed My Savings Account Withdrawal Limits?

If you’ve gone over your withdrawal limit a couple of times, your bank may charge you an extra fee. They might also prevent you from completing the excessive transactions. But the consequences will be even more severe if you make a habit of going over your withdrawal limit. The bank will either change your savings account into a checking account or close your savings account.

How Safe are Money Markets?

There are risks with all investments. However, money market accounts are a fairly safe option for investing that carries a low risk for the investor. Plus, your accounts are federally insured by The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) up to $250,000.

Is a Money Market Account or CD Better?

The best investment for your money is largely personal preference. If you’re looking for an investment that gives you more immediate access to your funds, a money market is the best option for you. As long as you don’t go over your transaction limit, you can withdraw from or deposit money into your account with ease.

You won’t have this same luxury with a CD. Once your money is in a CD, it’s there until the term is up. If you’re willing to part with your money long-term (two years or more), you’ll make a sizable return on a CD investment. But if you don’t want to invest for that long, a money market will usually offer you a better interest rate than a CD with a shorter term.

Can I Withdraw My Money from a Share Certificate Early?

Once your money is in a share certificate, you are committing not to use it for the length of your term. Thus, if you decide you want to withdraw your investment early, you will be penalized. The price of your penalty will depend on the length of the term.

Is a Share Certificate a Safe Investment?

Share certificates, just like any kind of investment, do carry some risk to the investor. However, they are very safe and, thus, they are usually considered one of the best investments you can make. They are insured by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund for up to $250,000.

What is the Difference Between a Certificate of Deposit (CDs) and a Share Certificate?

They are actually the same kind of investment. The difference is that a bank can issue CDs, while only a credit union can offer share certificates. Because of this, these investments are also insured by different organizations. While certificates of deposit are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), share certificates are insured by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF).
